Government plans to restrict Freedom of Information requests have been attacked by Berwick MP Alan Beith. Mr. Beith chairs the Commons Constitutional Affairs Committee, which called on the Government not to introduce charges for Information requests. In response the Government dropped its plans for charges, but threatened to limit the number of requests any one person or organisation can put forward.
Mr. Beith comments: "This new proposal could stop the press and pressure groups from bringing vital information out into the open, and flies in the face of the Committee's aim of creating a "Freedom of Information culture", which Ministers claim to support". Speaking in the Commons, he described the plans as "wide open to abuse by Departments that do not want important public issues raised".
