Alan Beith, M.P. backed local post offices by supporting a House of Commons motion which attacked the Government for putting the future of the Post Office network at risk. The motion attacked the withdrawal of pension books, passports and TV licences from the post office and the "disgraceful" decision to abandon the Post Office card account.
Mr. Beith comments: "Local post offices are a crucial link with vulnerable people in rural communities: they provide an essential social service, and the network must be maintained."
The Liberal Democrat motion was defeated by 295 votes to 218.
