Beith welcomes Passport Office decision for office in Berwick

11.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 23rd May 2006

Face-to-face interviews for new passport applications will be carried out in Berwick, following pressure on the government from local MP Alan Beith.

Alan said,

"I am glad the government has seen sense and made it possible for people to be interviewed in Berwick. However, there are still a host of practical problems facing the poor, the elderly and those living in the more remote areas."

There will be an office in Berwick where people can make new passport applications, rather than having to travel to Edinburgh or Newcastle. The new arrangements for all adult first-time applicants are expected to come in from late 2006.
