Rt. Hon. Alan Beith MP

Member of Parliament for Berwick Upon Tweed

Alan Beith

Welcome to my web site.

The Government's policy of closing Post Offices has caused a great deal of anger and many people are very worried about whether they will still be able to ge tto a Post office for the many services they need, from getting cash and benefits to banking and savings services, insurance, road tax - not to mention stamps and postal services.

Post Offices are highly valued in our rural area. Because we live in a rural, sparsely populated part of England, we depend on village Post Offices for many services, particularly because of the large distances which often have to be travelled to the larger towns and villages like Berwick, Alnwick, Rothbury and Amble.

The public consultation on the future of Post Offices in the Berwick-upon-Tweed constituency runs for just six weeks from 1 July 2008, when we will find out which Post Offices are under threat.

I am working with our local Post Offices to build the strongest case possible for saving our highly valued and much needed network.

I will continue to work hard and fight for our highly valued Post Offices.

I would welcome your comments on the Government's proposals and you can post these here:

It's always good to hear from people in and around the constituency, and from further afield. Please send me your comments and feedback, and suggestions for what you would like to see on the site, and remeember to include your postal address.

If you would like to come and meet me, or raise any issues, I hold regular surgeries in Alnwick and Berwick every month, and in other towns and villages at various times. You can find details by following this link:

"Attorney General's role should be split off, says Beith's Committee

Tue 24th Jun 2008

A report by the Justice Committee says revisions to the role of Attorney General proposed in the Draft Constitutional Renewal Bill do not answer the fundamental problem of maintaining public confidence in the role, namely, that it still combines the function of chief legal adviser to the Government with the role of Government minister. The Committee says that, despite the difficulties of drawing the line clearly between legal and political considerations, maintaining transparency and public confidence require the legal and political functions of the role to be split.
